“Devastated I’ve finished it”: Prime Video’s “gutsy” thriller jumps to top of streamer’s UK chart
The Assassin has had Prime Video subscribers raving about the high-stake thriller starring Keeley Hawes.
Added to the streamer on Friday (25 July), Harry and Jack Williams’s series has jumped to the top of Prime Video’s television charts in just a few days, with FlixPatrol ranking it above The Summer I Turned Pretty and Ballard.
The six-part thriller sees Hawes portray Julie, a retired hitwoman enjoying some peace and quiet on an idyllic Greek island. There, she’s reunited with her estranged son Edward (Freddie Highmore), who’s looking for answers about his father and his mum’s former life.
However, the mother and son duo will soon find themselves in danger when they’re targeted by someone from Julie’s past, proving that Edward may have been best not to ask any questions at all.
In Digital Spy‘s five-star review of the series, we hailed The Assassin as a “gutsy” take on the genre that was “like nothing we’ve seen before”, adding that Hawes’s central performance was the “standout”.

“The Line of Duty actor goes beneath the thrilling action-packed surface, and cuts through to the meat of the piece,” we wrote, adding that the series was an “exploration of womanhood in a male-dominated world”.

We weren’t the only ones to laud the series, with the thriller currently having an impressive approval rating of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes from seven reviews. Its user score on IMDb is also decent, clocking in at 6.2 out of 10 from 685 reviews.
Fans have been similarly captivated with the show, with one person writing on Instagram they were “devastated” to have finished it.
“Watched episode 1 last night. I loved it, especially the sarcastic humour,” another fan noted, while someone else called the series “so gripping”.
Another fan binged the six-parts “in a day”, while another expressed their excitement at how the various subplots were “spun”.
