Coronation Street has shared a touching tribute to original star Alan Rothwell, following his death last month. The actor, who played David Barlow on the soap, died on 14 May at the age of 89.

Rothwell appeared on Corrie when it first launched back in 1960 until 1969. His character David was the brother of Ken Barlow, played by the soap’s longest-serving actor William Roache.

Tonight’s episode is dedicated to Rothwell’s memory and features a tribute to the star, which appears before the end credits.

The statement highlighted his impressive work as a “professional radio, television, film and stage actor and director”, with a career that “spanned more than 70 years”.
