The Fly Team is getting bigger! Less than a year after replacing Luke Kleintank with Chicago P.D. alum Jesse Lee Soffer, FBI: International is adding yet another primetime alum to its cast, and this time, he comes from Shondaland.

New Fly Team member, Federal Agent Tyler Booth (played by Station 19 alum Jay Hayden), made his debut in FBI: International Season 4, Episode 7, “Keen As A Bean,” which introduced him as one of  Supervisory Special Agent Wes Mitchell’s best friend.

In an interview with TVInsider before his FBI: International debut, Hayden explained that the reason Booth was in Hungary was to track down someone on the FBI’s Most Wanted List. Could another appearance on FBI: Most Wanted — or a full-time role — be in Booth’s future?

“He’s there for someone on the FBI’s Most Wanted List that he’s been pursuing for a frustratingly long time and he’s finally got a break in the case. The bad guy, Ed Haskins [Will Janowitz], is in Russia and the team can’t get him out because he’s protected. He’s going to try to lure him using his ex-wife Kelsey [Erin Way],” Hayden said. “He knows that the Fly Team is in Budapest and he hopes Wes, his old friend, will help him.”

As for Booth’s backstory, Hayden revealed that Booth and Mitchell’s “dark” past could come back to haunt them now that they’re both working with the Fly Team. “He’s worked with Wes Mitchell previously to Wes’ coming over to the Fly Team,” he said of his character. “They got involved in some dark dealings back then and now they’re brought back to together again. There’s a very interesting difference in character.”

He also teased Booth’s difficult dynamics with the rest of the Fly Team. “I don’t think you would classify Tyler Booth as a goody-two-shoes,” he said. “I’m not sure if everyone on the Fly Team will get along with him; he doesn’t do everything by the book. He’s more concerned about getting the job done. I do think it will be fun to watch him interact, not only with Wes, but the team’s other members.”

Hayden — who confirmed that Booth will be in FBI: International for more than two episodes — also explained the similarities and differences between Booth and his Station 19 character, Travis Montgomery. “There is a similar sense of sarcasm in both of them. [Laughs] There is a little bit of that. But they’re both so highly motivated in different ways, in coming in at different angles in this life, I believe the audience will think Tyler’s just a much different character,” he said.
