Grey’s Anatomy Spinoff Set in Texas Coming to ABC
Grey’s Anatomy is getting a spinoff set in the South from series creator Shonda Rhimes and current showrunner Meg Marinis, E! News confirmed.
According to ABC, the new series will be “an edgy drama about a team at a rural West Texas medical center—the last chance for care before miles of nowhere.”
While it’s not yet known how the characters from Seattle’s Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital are related to the doctors from the Lone Star state, Marinis teased that fans can expect to meet plenty of new faces doing the life-saving Emergency Room work they’ve come to know and love from the flagship series, which returns for season 23 later this year.
“I am incredibly excited to expand the Grey’s Anatomy universe,” she said in a May 19 statement. “This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from Grey’s for more than two decades—all set in my home state of Texas.”
Marinis—who has helmed the last three seasons of Grey’s—concluded with, “I am so grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating this dynamic world and feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it.”
The untitled one-hour drama marks the hit franchise’s fourth spinoff following Private Practice and Station 19.
The announcement comes amid some major changes in Grey’s Anatomy‘s hospital staff.
Longtime stars Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver, who have played Dr. Owen Hunt and Dr. Teddy Altman, respectively, for nearly 20 years, exited the series during the season 22 finale earlier this month.
“I think it’s good to see the doctors when they do make a mistake, but also with good intentions,” Shum Jr. exclusively told E! News May 14. “It wasn’t just because he was a bumbling mess.”
So, has the surgical resident scrubbed out of the Operating Room for good?
“I’m just as much in the dark as audiences,” he admitted when asked if he’ll return for season 23. “But to me, it’s a hope of: Do audiences want to see him go or do they want to see him go back to the hospital?”
