EastEnders star speaks out on surprise Julie Bates exit as cast pay tribute

EastEnders star Karen Henthorn has spoken out on her surprise exit as Julie Bates, with cast members paying tribute to the star. Last night’s scenes saw the character depart Walford following the recent death of husband Nigel.

In the emotional scenes, she opened the letter Nigel left her, discovering he had left money for her to go on their dream trip to India. She shared her plans to return to Scotland, though as the locals gathered to give her a proper send off, Julie quietly snuck off without saying goodbye.

Phil Mitchell managed to catch her at the station in the nick of time after finding a farewell note, with the pair sharing a poignant goodbye.

EastEnders has now shared a behind-the-scenes Instagram video of Karen’s final day on set, as the star tells fans: “It’s my last day and I’ve had the best time, the best 10 and a half months, and the cast and crew. It’s always about the people. Whatever you do in life, it’s always about people and kindness.”

After praising the “fantastic” TikTok clips that they had been making and the fans watching them, she concluded: “Thanks for your love, your support and your commitment and dedication to the programme, which you love as much as I love.

“And I’m going to really miss it, and I’m really going to miss you. So thanks everyone, take care of each other. Loads and loads of love.”

The clip also includes executive producer Ben Wadey paying a touching tribute on set to Karen, who is seen getting visibly emotional.

Some of her co-stars have paid tribute in the comments too, Diane Parish (Denise Fox) writing: “The most gorgeous, warm, funny and talented woman. Missed already.”

Michelle Collins (Cindy Beale) added: “Live Karen xxx,” while on-screen son Jon Lee (Josh Saunders) shared: “Ah my little mum! One of the most beautiful people I’ve ever worked with. So talented, such a great actor…. And one of the nicest, sweetest, funniest human beings you will ever have the pleasure to meet. So much love for Karen.”
