The Good Doctor‘s legal spinoff The Good Lawyer starring Desperate Housewives‘ Felicity Huffman and Nancy Drew‘s Kennedy McMann has been cancelled at ABC.

The spinoff aired a backdoor pilot during The Good Doctor‘s recent sixth season, though according to TVLine, network ABC has decided not to opt for a series order for the legal drama.

The episode starred Huffman alongside Kennedy McMann as Joni DeGroot – an attorney with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) – and introduced viewers to the pair via some legal troubles for Freddie Highmore’s Dr Shaun Murphy.

After Dr Murphy is sued for malpractice, he meets Joni, who helps him clear his name with the assistance of Huffman’s Janet Stewart.

The crossover, titled ‘The Good Lawyer’, occurred on March 13 during the 16th episode of the sixth season of The Good Doctor, and saw DeGroot and Murphy triumph in their legal battle.

The character of Stewart served as a mentor to Nancy Drew star Kennedy McMann‘s DeGroot in a similar fashion to Dr Glassman (Richard Schiff) to Dr Murphy.

The Good Doctor was renewed for a seventh season in April this year. The critically acclaimed medical drama began in 2017 and follows Shaun, a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome.

Although this makes his personal life difficult at times, the character is able to utilise his unique ability to visualize the human body and diagnose and treat various medical conditions.

The latest season’s finale aired in May, and left viewers on a cliffhanger, with Shaun’s partner Lea Dilallo-Murphy (Paige Spara) giving birth to the pair’s child.
