Chicago Med

Chicago Med is created by Law & Order creator Dick Wolf and is part of its own “Chicago” franchise, so there’s a lot connecting this one to other marathon-able shows. For eight seasons, this current series has followed the doctors and nurses at the fictional Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, with stars including Yaya DaCosta, Nick Gehlfuss, and Torrey DeVitto. Expect plenty of crossovers with Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D.

Doogie Howser, M.D.

Travel back to the late ’80s with Doogie Howser, M.D., which ran for four seasons after debuting in 1989. A young Neil Patrick Harris stars as Doogie Howser, a genius teenager, who became a doctor at 14. It’s a sitcom, so there’s plenty of antics as Doogie figures out being a doctor while also living his teen life. There’s also a new adaptation called Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.

The Knick

And if you want to go back even further in time, there are the two seasons of The Knick. But beware that this show is much heavier (even the trailer above is pretty graphic). Set at New York City’s Knickerbocker Hospital in the early 1900s, the show follows Dr. John Thackery (Clive Owen), a respected doctor, who is also a drug addict, and Dr. Algernon C. Edwards (André Holland), a new Black doctor, who is talented but faces racism on the job.

One Born Every Minute

For those looking for a medical reality show, the massively popular British docuseries One Born Every Minute follows people expecting babies during their experiences in the hospital. There are 11 seasons of the British original available, but there have also been adaptations, including an American version that aired in Lifetime in 2011 and 2012.

St. Elsewhere

Come for young Denzel Washington, stay for the drama? St. Elsewhere, which was on for six seasons in the 1980s, is about the doctors at St. Eligius Hospital in Boston. It set the stage for future medical shows like ER and Grey’s with its combo of procedural medical storylines with personal lives mixed in. (It also had a famously bizarre series finale.)
