FBI: International Season 4, Episode 8, “You’ll Never See It Coming” used the oldest trick in the book to end the midseason finale by putting Cameron Vo (Vinessa Vidotto) on the brink of death after being shot by a sniper while she and Wes Mitchell (Jesse Lee Soffer) were trying to recapture the man who killed his partner. The moment was supposed to cause Wes pain and remind him of his previous loss. And it did exactly that, along with introducing the beginning of a new romance.

The episode ended with Andre informing the team it didn’t “look good” for Vo, and Wes vowing to get revenge on who hurt her. If FBI: International wanted to actually kill Cameron Vo, the midseason finale would have been the perfect time to do it. So, if she actually survived the episode, chances are she’s not dying.

Instead, this very much seemed like the setup for a possible romance between Mitchell and Vo. This felt particularly true considering the episode was filled with hints of Vo’s importance to Mitchell and vice versa. Even the bad guy realized Vo was someone Mitchell cared about and he’d been around for 0.2 seconds. Add to Mitchell’s reaction when Vo got shot (not to mention the hand holding in the ambulance), it’s clear that the fall finale was more than just the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Relationships are the bread and butter of procedurals and FBI: International could do with a good one, particularly one that takes a little bit to come together. Jesse Lee Soffer was in the middle of one on Chicago P.D. for years while he played Jay Halstead and Tracy Spiridakos, his rumored real-life girlfriend, played Hailey Upton. So he knows the power of a good slow-burn ship. The FBI franchise doesn’t really have a great ship, despite the fact that a lot of people have been shipping Maggie and OA in FBI for years — that has remained platonic and it’s hard to know if it’s even a slow-burn at this point or if the show just doesn’t intend to go romantic with them at all. But Mitchell and Vo? That feels intentional, and it’s only been half a season.

In the meantime, though, FBI: International wants us to worry about Cameron Vo. And it wants us to worry about the mental state of Wes Mitchell and the entire “Fly Team.” Fans will probably do just that, but they will also have time to discuss the possibility of a Mitchell and Vo romance while they’re at it, which is probably what the show wanted. FBI: International will, after all, not be back until the end of January 2025. And nothing makes fans more excited for a show to return than a cliffhanger, and a possible romance.
